The UK-China International Forestry Investment and Trade Programme (InFIT) is a joint initiative of China's State Forestry Administration (SFA), China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), it is part of the global Forest Governance, Markets and Climate (FGMC) project.
The overall objective of this project is to implement control measures in the international trade of Chinese timber products and related forest products that affect forest land degradation, to remove illegally harvested timber from trade, and to develop or implement relevant codes of conduct to promote environmental and a socially beneficial approach to resource management.
Initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1976, the Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce (TRAFFIC) works to ensure that wildlife trade is not a threat to the conservation of nature through monitoring. Headquartered in the UK, TRAFFIC sets up 10 offices globally. TRAFFIC came to China in 1996. It set up the China Program Office in 2001 and the Beijing Representative Office of TRAFFIC (UK) in December 2019.
TRAFFIC campaigns in China focuses on two areas. On the one hand, we minimize wildlife crimes and illegal trade by providing appropriate support for the Chinese government to combat illegal wildlife trade through information sharing and capacity building of law enforcement personnel. On the other hand, we enhance the benefits from sustainable and legal wildlife trade by advancing the sustainable collection and utilization of species allowed to be legally traded, especially wood and medicinal plants, to facilitate the building of a sustainable trade system.
In addition, TRAFFIC partners with relevant businesses to reduce the risk of engaging in illegal wildlife trade, and is committed to raising public awareness of wildlife protection, thereby minimizing the demand of target populations for illegal wildlife products.
